In the past year we have refocused our energies on Solid State Lighting, and the technologies to enable sustainable living through alternative energy sources.  The Evolution of Artificial Light:

• Fire produces both heat and light- the candle! (least efficient: 0.3 Lumens/Watt)
  
• Edison produced the incandescent bulb. (not efficient: 17.5 lumens/Watt)
  
• Mercury vapor is used to produce fluorescent light with an unattractive institutional appearance. (moderately efficient: 60 lumens/Watt)
  
• Light emitting diodes (LEDs, or Solid State Lights) produce photons directly from electrons with roughly 37% efficiency. They can be dimmed, color-mixed, and are directly compatible with solar energy sources. (extremely efficient: 150 Lumens/Watt)
